AIM Opens Up Web API

AOL releases Web based APIs for its instant messaging system. This is huge – having IM as a closed, non-pluggable island was a great waste. I hope the other majors (Yahoo, MSN) will do the same.

They’re even offering ways of creating IM bots as part of the offering. I’m definitely going to be putting this to use in side projects, will report on how it goes.

    On topic, I’m very happy about AIM opening up. I’ve wanted to add IM interfaces to systems for years now, and hacking clients has been a real pain. Doing something as simple as “send me an IM when machine X has a load factor over 5.0″ was too difficult to be worthwhile; hopefully this will change that.

    Yes, I’ve been wanting to have my computer IM me for a long time now (I’m very lonely) and had actually started a couple of projects in that track but let them wither due to difficulty of getting the IM libraries to work. This make things much easier…
